TV Gambling – what’s your verdict?
Despite the wide popularity of online gambling in the UK, public opinion on live televised gambling services is unclear, which is why the Right Casino Media – one of the country’s principal online casino authorities, recently carried out a UK television gambling survey to try and figure out how this form of gambling is viewed by the population.
In order to complete the survey, 1,000 households were randomly chosen and all inhabitants asked a series of questions to gauge their attitudes to this form of gambling. They found that overall 49% of people were indifferent to the use of live TV gambling and whilst 28% were in support of legal televised gambling, 23% of those who were questioned actually wanted to make live televised gambling illegal.
Many of the participants that were surveyed who were indifferent to the use of televised gambling, felt that as there are easy ways to block these channels, having the programmes on TV is not that big of an issue. Kerry Thornton from Surrey for example highlighted that most of these shows are on very late in the evening: “If you’re old enough to be up at that time you’re old enough to make your own legal decision.”
There were however some participants that were worried about the fact that TV gave people easy access to gambling services, although many felt that the adverse effects of televised gambling could be controlled.
As with any form of gambling, there is likely to be several arguments for and against the legal status of televised gambling– but what is perhaps most surprising about this survey is the large number of respondents who were indifferent to the issue, suggesting that it is not as prickly a subject as many may have first believe.
David Merry, the Director of Right Casino Media, who organised the survey, was keen to point out that they supported television gambling as long as operators kept to a strict code of conduct to make sure that only responsible adults were able to play.
