Social Gaming is on the Rise
In recent years we have seen the rapid growth in social gaming, where players come together to enjoy a range of online and mobile games as a way of interacting socially, with a vast number of studies conducted to try and dissect this growing social trend. In this article we take a look at some of the results of these studies and surveys in an attempt to get to grips with the rapid rise in social gaming!
Amazingly, it is estimated that 81 million people play social games every single day – this may be through smartphones, tablets or other connected devices such as game consoles, with one study showing that the majority of social gamers play multiple times per week and more than 60% play at least once a day. This study of UK and US social gamers found that over half of those surveyed named “fun and excitement” as their chief reason for playing.
We are also beginning to see certain patterns emerging in terms of the countries partaking in social gaming. The Global Online Gaming Report 2025 for example found that Great Britain and Germany are leading the way in Europe when it comes to social play, with nearly one-fifth of the total time spent playing games in the UK spent on social networking site.
Indeed, it is because of this increase in social games that many gaming companies are looking to work with other brands to employ social games as a means of advertising their products.
A lot of these social games come in the form of ‘freemium games’ where the games are offered for free through social media channels or mobile apps to gain exposure and player support. After a set number of levels are reached on these games, players are asked to invest in the premium versions of these services.
