The game of roulette originated in France in the 18th Century, with the French word ‘roulette’ meaning ‘small wheel.’ The game of roulette as it is played today has been around since 1796 in Paris. The basic game consists of a wheel labelled with different numbers and colours spun whilst a small ball is dropped onto the wheel to see where the ball lands. Players can place bets on the colour and the number that the ball will land on.

On the roulette wheel the pockets are numbered from one to thirty-six, with odd numbers from 1 to 10 and 19 to 28, coloured red whilst even numbers in this range are black. Odd numbers in the range 11 to 18 and 29 to 36, are conversely coloured black, whilst even numbers in these ranges are red.

There is also a green pocket on the wheel which is numbered 0, which the French introduced in the 1950s to reduce the casino’s edge. In American roulette on the other hand, there is an additional green pocket marked 00 – this double zero increases the casino’s edge.
The numbers of the pockets are usually ordered in the following clockwise sequence:

On a single-zero wheel: 0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26
On a double-zero wheel: 0-28-9-26-30-11-7-20-32-17-5-22-34-15-3-24-36-13-1-00-27-10-25-29-12-8-19-31-18-6-21-33-16-4-23-35-14-2

The main aim of the game is to guess the number that the ball will land on. There are two different types of bet that players can place: inside and outside bets. The inside bets are bets placed on a specific number or group of numbers, whilst the outside bets allow players to bet on whether the ball will land on red or black, and odd or even numbers on the wheel as well as other different groups of numbers.
