Online Gambling ignored in the Democratic Party Manifesto

This week saw the release of the Democratic Party’s official manifesto, at The Democratic National Convention where Barack Obama was nominated as the Party’s presidential candidate for the US elections this November. Interestingly, and in sharp contrast to the manifesto issued by the Republican Party three weeks ago, this 70-page manifesto did not mention online gambling or online poker at all.

Indeed, whilst the Republican Party categorically stated their opposition to the legalization of any form of online gambling in the US, The Democratic Party was silent on the issue. Some have interpreted this omission as a sign of their desire to avoid this extremely sensitive and controversial subject; however some Democratic senators have spoken out about their support for government regulated poker and expressed their disagreement with the Republican Party’s strict stance.

Others within the online gambling sector have interpreted this omission as a sign of hope, including John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, who is optimistic that an anti-gambling stance was not officially taken. He expressed: “Countless Democratic members of Congress have expressed their support of a licensed and regulated online poker market in the U.S. and we are working diligently to advance legislation to make this a reality.”
